Naming Forms
Three shapes a Pattern's name may take — the noun, the verb made noun, and the composed phrase — each chosen because the wisdom it carries is that kind of thing.
Nominal names states, aspects, and qualities: Awe, Fear, Love, the Field. The thing named is a condition one can be in, and the name holds still.
Verbal-gerund names sustained cultivation: Eating, Walking, Listening, Forgiving. The wisdom is not a state but a doing kept up over time, and the -ing says so. A gerund name is a quiet instruction.
Composed phrase is used where the bare noun would be too passive and the bare gerund forced: Speaking Truth In Love, Channeling Fury, Sitting With Anguish. The wisdom lives in the qualification — truth in love, fury channeled — and stripping the phrase to one word would lose exactly the part that matters.
The form is not decoration; it is a compressed claim about what kind of thing the Pattern is, and choosing wrongly teaches wrongly. A cultivation named as a state invites the reader to check whether they have it rather than to practise it. A state named as a gerund invites striving where receptivity was the move.
The rule that governs all three is Word Tools: one working name per wisdom, the others honored as aliases, and the name always a pointer rather than the thing. Names are also the place where the Language is most easily inflated — a verb can be coined for anything, and a coinage with no Card behind it is a name without a note. Roughly five hundred and seventy-five such coinages sit in the inventory, named and unarticulated; they are a backlog, not a vocabulary (Patterns Pending Articulation).
