Fear
The body's report that something is at stake. Five states are kept distinct — fear, dread, terror, worry, nervousness — because they report different things and ask for different responses.
Fear is the direct signal: something here threatens what matters. It is fast, specific, and usually accurate about the presence of stakes even when wrong about their size. Dread is slower and anticipatory — the weight of something approaching that has not arrived. Terror is fear at the intensity where capacity begins to fail. Worry is fear that has entered thought and is circling, no longer reporting but rehearsing. Nervousness is the body's activation before something that matters, which is as often about significance as about danger.
Collapsing them costs precision. Worry treated as fear sends a Sovereign looking for a threat that is not in the room; the response it actually asks for is settling, not vigilance. Dread treated as worry gets argued with when it should be heeded — the canon names foreboding as a warning to be read rather than dismissed. Terror asks first for the breath and the ground, not for analysis.
The discipline is Mastery Of Emotions applied here: feel it fully, read what it reports, respond to the field rather than to the feeling, release when its work is done. The canonical move is integration rather than conquest — fear is not defeated, it is received, understood, and carried. A Sovereign who has integrated fear can act inside it, which is what Composure Under Threat rests on. A Sovereign who has suppressed it will meet it again at the worst moment, arriving as terror.
Fear is also the oldest instrument of domination: a frightened people is governable, and manufactured fear is one of the ways consent is bypassed. Reading one's own fear accurately is therefore not only an inner discipline but a defence.
