Language

The symbolic medium through which thought, Story, and the Logos become speakable and shareable — and the first thing any system of control goes after.

In the Caves the keepers did not rule by force. They spoke, and the prisoners repeated. The most important words a people has were the first taken and worn hollow, until a word meant to be a bridge became a trigger. The chains are made of vocabulary before they are made of anything else. This is the canon's sharpest claim about language, and it sets the discipline that follows from it.

So the counter-practice is deliberate and stated. Every word is a tool — a pointer toward something real, never the thing itself, never an idol. Every word is given the first time you meet it, in one line, and linked after, so a reader can always look again. There is no fixed number of words; they arrive at the pace the road needs them, rather than as a glossary handed over at the door. When two people use a word, they mean the same thing; and when they find they do not, they say so, and they fix the word rather than each other.

It is load-bearing because shared language is what makes federation possible without a ruler. Ten thousand tables can run one game only if line one of a sheet means the same thing in every tongue — words translated freely, lines kept in order, the numbers meaning what they say. And it is load-bearing in the other direction: Semantic Capture stands among The Anti-Patterns precisely because taking a word's meaning is the cheapest possible way to take a movement.

In play, a Cell does this without ceremony. Say what you mean by a word the first time you use it. Notice when two members have been meaning different things for a month. Translate rather than import — the Pattern is general, its words are local, and a term that does not land in a language should be replaced rather than transliterated.
