Navigating Difference

How a healthy body carries what does not fit its own standard — a named gap, and the honest starting observation beneath it.

At the centre of every category a people uses there sits something like a standard: the archetypal member, the assumed case, the shape the doors were built for. Nothing actually sits at that centre. Every real being is distributed around it, differently on every axis at once — body, mind, pace, capacity, season of life, way of knowing. Difference is therefore not an exception to be accommodated but the normal condition, and a body that designs for the centre has designed for no one.

It is load-bearing because the failure it prevents is quiet and cumulative. A body rarely excludes anyone deliberately; it simply builds its rhythms, its rooms, its expectations and its language around the assumed case, and then discovers that certain people keep drifting away and no one can say why. The gradient around the norm is where limitation and disability live, where beginning-of-life and end-of-life limitation live, where the temporary and the chronic live, and where a great deal of a body's genius lives too.

In the Game, the practical instruments already exist and are thin: more is welcome and never required, the permissive Walk that lets some move in days what others move in seasons, the zone of optimum development that asks what this person needs next rather than what the curriculum says comes next, the hand copy on any paper that counts exactly as much as a printed one. In the System, it bears on accessibility of the instruments themselves — whether the cards, the sheets, the rooms and the standards can actually be used by someone the assumed case does not describe.

This is a named gap, and it is fair to say so. What is written is the observation; what is needed is the practice — how difference is raised, whose discomfort is whose to manage, what caregiving a body owes, and how a standard is revised by the people it does not fit.
