Universal-Accessing

Designing for the whole gradient of bodies and minds, so that nobody has to ask permission to take part.

Universal accessing is the discipline of building so that the range of actual human beings can use the thing: bodies that do not move the standard way, senses that do not work the standard way, minds that process differently, and the same body at four years old, at forty, and at ninety. The standard human the Old World designs for does not exist; every design that assumes them excludes real people, and then calls the exclusion an individual misfortune.

Two commitments follow. The first is that access is designed in, not retrofitted. An accommodation added afterward marks its user as an exception; a design that anticipated the range makes the same person simply a participant. The second is that the gradient is the truth — there is no clean line between disabled and not, only a wide continuous range that every person moves along over a life.

The Pillar's claim that spaces must serve all dimensions of being, and that every community deserves inspiring spaces that dignify each life, is not satisfied by a building most people can enter. Dignity is inherent and not conditional on capability, and a design that quietly ranks bodies contradicts the thing the community says it believes more loudly than any of its statements.

Inside the Game this is ordinary and cheap. Twelve words are enough to play. The floor is paper, not a screen. A hand copy counts as much as a printed one. The lines of a season are numbered so they translate. None of that was built for a special case; it was built so that the Game could be played by anyone, in any language, with or without money, sight, quiet, a machine, or a teacher.
