Cross-Cultural Pattern Translation
How a Pattern crosses into another culture without breaking: the wisdom travels, the rendering is remade locally, and the local rendering feeds back.
A Pattern is general and its applications are always specific, which means crossing a culture is not a special case — it is the ordinary case at a larger stride. What must survive the crossing is the wisdom-unit: the context, the forces, the move. What must not be carried is the first culture's particular clothing — its examples, its idiom, its assumed calendar, its assumed family shape.
Two failures sit either side. Imposition carries the clothing with the wisdom and calls the result universal; the receiving people are asked to become the sending people in order to receive what was meant to be theirs. Dilution drops so much in translation that the note no longer sounds — what arrives is the vocabulary without the discipline, and it teaches nothing.
The disciplines that make a faithful crossing possible are already held: Word Tools says that many tongues honed different names for the same Reality and none of them is the Reality; Lineage says a faithful walker of one stream can recognize the same Logos in another's vocabulary; On translating says the words change and the lines keep their order, so that a sheet written in one language can still be read in another. The structural floor is the same: the same card shape, the same week, the same turnings kept by the sun, the same numbered lines (Minimum standards of interoperability).
The feedback half matters as much. A Pattern localized well returns something the original did not have, and the Language is richer for it. This is named in the canon as a gap in self-maintenance — the practice is asserted and the process is not written.
