The Zone Of Optimum Development
Never overwhelming, never under-challenging — the band in which a learner actually grows.
Between what a person can already do alone and what they cannot do at all lies a narrow band: what they can do with help, and what they will shortly be able to do without it. That band is where growth happens. Below it, the task is comfortable and teaches nothing. Above it, the task is impossible and teaches only that one cannot do it — which is a lesson people keep for decades. Almost all bad teaching is simply aim: the right material delivered outside the band.
The band moves, which is why it cannot be set once. It moves as the learner grows, and it moves with the day — the same person is in a different place tired, grieving, or newly arrived in a room of strangers. So finding it is a matter of attention rather than of design: what is this one, now, ready for? This is why Apprenticeship works and a syllabus often does not, and why Wise Eldership and the Guide's office are described as knowing where someone is on their path and serving the next stretch of it.
Two disciplines put it into practice. Just in time: a whole curriculum at the door is a wall, one Lesson arriving when you are about to need it is a door — so delivery is paced to the road rather than to the plan. And a Zero Blame Environment: aiming at the edge of competence means missing regularly, so a body that punishes misses will find its members quietly retreating to what they already know. Every Defect Is A Gift is what makes the edge safe to stand on.
At a table it is one question, asked of each other and not only by a teacher: what is the next thing that would stretch you? The Circle usually knows before the person does, because it has watched them all season.
