Patterns And Containers

A Pattern is a reusable wisdom-unit any actor can invoke at any scale; a container is a particular stage, day, season, or ring. Containers use Patterns. They are not Patterns.

The distinction is small and it holds the whole Language upright. Form a Cell is a Pattern: it can be invoked by anyone, anywhere, at any scale, whenever the moment calls for it. The Three-Year Formation is a container: a specific stretch of time, with a beginning and an end, inside which many Patterns are invoked. So is a Season, so is The Turn, so is a Ring, so is The 144 Gates of Initiation.

Confusing the two is how a Pattern Language bloats and then rots. Every stage of every arc gets filed as a Pattern; the count balloons; the reader can no longer find the reusable wisdom under the scaffolding of particular journeys. And in the other direction, a container mistaken for a Pattern gets applied where it does not belong — a specific calendar imposed on a people whose season turns differently.

The working test: can any actor invoke this at any scale, in any season? If yes, Pattern. If it names a specific position in a specific arc, container. Containers are honored — they are how a life and a Body are held in time — and they live in their own documents, where they can say plainly what they contain.

The discipline composes with General Pattern, Specific Application, which handles the sibling confusion: an application mistaken for a new Pattern. Together they are the two filters through which anything proposed for the Language must pass.
