Post-Capitalist

A borrowed label for a society and economy after capitalism's primacy — useful for locating the conversation, and carrying almost none of the substance.

The word names an emerging or hypothetical state in which the traditional arrangements — private ownership of the means of production, and the pursuit of profit as the organizing aim — are replaced by something else. That is the whole of its content: a not. It says what has ended and leaves the next thing unspecified, which is why a hundred incompatible proposals all claim it and why it settles nothing between them.

It is kept in the field as a bridge rather than a foundation. Someone arriving from the wider conversation about the future of economies will already hold the word, and will want to know where LIØNSBERG stands in relation to it. The honest answer is: the diagnosis overlaps, the prescription does not come from there. What does the work here is specific and structural — Capital Subordinate To Purpose says capital serves and never captures; The asset lock says no one extracts more than they put in plus honest pay; The waterfall fixes the order of payment so the values are legible in the sequence; Commons and Voluntary Tithing say what is held together and how it is resourced. Each of those can be checked against a real body's books. "Post-capitalist" cannot.

There is a further reason for caution. A label defined by its opposite keeps the opposite at the centre — it still organizes thinking around capitalism, now as the thing being escaped. The Pattern's framing is different in kind: it does not begin from an economic system at all, but from The Goal and from Value as throughput of it, and derives the economic arrangements from there. Much of what capitalism does well survives that derivation; what does not survive is capital's primacy, which was never the interesting part.

Use the word to meet someone where they are. Do not build on it.
