Storytelling

The act of telling what happened so that it can travel — the sixth of The Seven Moves, and the primary vehicle by which culture spreads.

Every Quest becomes a story, and the story goes further than the people who did the work ever could. That is the entire mechanism. Not a report, which transmits data to whoever must read it; a story, which transmits meaning to whoever wants to. A report says a Circle completed a garden; a story says what it was like when the neighbour who had complained for two months arrived with tomatoes, and the second one is the one that reaches the next street.

It is load-bearing because it sits between the work and the spread. In the canonical sequence it comes after Celebrate, Learn, and Improve and before Pass The Flame, and the order is not arbitrary: what has been done, celebrated, and refined is what becomes worth telling, and what is told is what makes the Flame worth carrying. A movement that does real work and never tells it grows arithmetically, one conversation at a time. One that tells well grows the way the Fibonacci Spread describes.

In play it is small, weekly, and specific. Someone tells one story at The Turn. One story a season, in under a hundred and fifty words, goes up on The Season Sheet to the Circle's Home — which is how ten thousand tables learn from one another without a centre collecting anything. The honest form is the useful one: what we tried, what actually happened, what we would do differently. A story that hides the failure teaches nothing and is quickly distrusted; Every Defect Is A Gift applies to the telling as much as to the work.

Storytelling is also formation. A person who has told their own story once in front of people who know them is changed by having said it aloud, which is why Testimony is held as a distinct form and why the Bard who keeps and tells a body's stories is a named office rather than a hobby.
