Fibonacci Spread

The arithmetic of a living thing: one, two, three, five, eight, thirteen — each cycle the sum of the two before it.

The seed spreads the way living things spread, hand to hand at the pace of trust. Each person who receives it carries it, within about a week, to the two or three they know are ready; those form their own Cells and do the same (Pass The Flame, The Flame, Midwife a New Circle). Counted in cycles, that gives the old sequence — and the counting is a way of seeing the shape, never a forecast: one hundred and forty-four Cells passing faithfully reach a great many people within a year, and a hundred and forty-four that do not reach nobody.

The model is old in the canon and its old numbers should be read as illustration. What holds is the mechanism, not the schedule: growth by relationship rather than by broadcast, and a doubling that depends on each body being complete rather than on any centre being large (Grow Your Cells, Self-Sustenance and Self-Replication).

The rule that keeps it honest is stated plainly: propagate, do not scale. Nothing grows by making the centre larger; one Cell planting the next is the only mechanism that ever could carry a pattern to a planet (Centralization Of Power, Holofractal Scaling, Tipping Point Strategy). And the passing is never optional — the fruit of the tree contains new seeds, and a Cell that never passes the flame dies with its founders.
