The 3 Year Lag

The three years between a person's yes and their actual freedom — the delay between planting and fruit, built into the plan rather than wished away.

The observed figure is about three years of healing, collaborating, and transforming before a person feels genuinely free, empowered, and self-governing. Not three years to understand the Pattern — understanding is quick — but three years for the understanding to become a life. The lag is a fact about human formation, and the plan is shaped around it rather than against it.

It is load-bearing because it determines when anything can be said to be finished. If the last person who wishes to accept the Invitation does so in a given year, the work is not complete that year; it is complete about three years later. This is why the grand strategy is described in phases rather than as a single stretch: a window in which all are invited, then the lag while the last cohort is formed, then the inauguration of what follows. Anyone counting only the invitations is counting the wrong thing.

In the Game, the lag is why three years of formation is asked of each person who comes, and why belts and the stages of the Path are permissive rather than time-boxed — some walk in days what others walk in seasons, and the three years is a median rather than a requirement. It is also the honest answer to the newcomer who asks how long this takes: the first week changes your week, the first season produces something real, and the rest is slower than that.

In the System, the lag is a scheduling fact with teeth. A plan that assumes a person is productive in the Pattern the month they join will be wrong by years at scale; a plan that carries the lag explicitly can be checked. It sits inside the grand strategy as its trailing phase, and the whole is coupled to a much longer contingency for exactly this reason.
