The Dual-Axis Energy Model
Three systems — consciousness, brain, body — exchanging energy and information; and two axes on which the state of the whole can be read: calm against alert, and anxious against exploring.
The lattice. Consciousness, the brain, and the autonomic body are in continuous exchange, and what a person experiences as their state is the result of that traffic rather than of any one of the three. The practical consequence is that the state can be reached from more than one direction: through what is attended to, through what is thought, and through the body directly (Consciousness, Breath, Embodiment).
The first axis is activation: calm ↔ alert. At one end, deep and uninterrupted sleep; at the other, a panic attack. Neither end is the goal. Alert is right for a moment that needs it, calm is right for a moment that needs that, and the aim is to be able to move consciously between them rather than to settle anywhere (Rest And Regeneration, Sleeping, Composure Under Threat).
The second axis is direction: anxious ↔ exploring. The same activated energy can be pointed at threat, defence, and retreat, or at curiosity and forward movement. This is the axis most accounts of stress leave out, and it explains why two people at identical levels of arousal can be having entirely different experiences (Fear, Discovery, Wayfaring).
The ideal is a capacity, not a set point. What is wanted is not permanent calm — the canon is explicit — but the trained ability to modulate to what the moment actually requires, with the alert periods pointed forward rather than backward. A person locked anywhere on either axis is dysregulated, including locked in calm (Mastery Of Emotions, Attunement).
And the canon's claim about agency: the balance does not always arrive on its own; often it has to be consciously made. That is why this sits inside what a person can actually take responsibility for — and why the first move it recommends is not a technique but a direction: set yourself in motion toward something worth moving toward (Worthy Goal, Green, Yellow, Red — And Its Calibration, Aligned Will).

Open: The model uses the vocabulary of physiology without citing any; it is offered as a working picture a person can navigate by, not as a finding. · It sits inside a sixteen-chapter sequence whose later chapters depend on the earlier ones, and reads thinner alone than in place.
