The Manna Discipline

Receiving what is given each day in the crossing — and not hoarding it.

Named in the Pattern Language among the patterns of The Wilderness, and not yet written out. What the name carries, and what the older story it borrows from carries, is a practice with two halves: take what today actually requires, and do not stockpile against a scarcity you have imagined. The crossing is provisioned, but not in advance and not in bulk.

Its load-bearing function is psychological before it is economic. In the passage between worlds the ordinary supports are gone and the new ones are not yet standing, and the mind's reflex is to secure the future by accumulation. That reflex is precisely what the old arrangement runs on — manufactured Scarcity, and the anxiety that makes extraction feel like prudence. A body that carries the reflex across the boundary rebuilds the thing it left. The discipline is therefore a form of Trust made practical, and it is the daily-scale companion of Abundance and of The Offering, where what is held is put in the middle of the table rather than under the bed.

It is not improvidence, and nothing here licenses the neglect of dependents or the refusal of ordinary planning. Looking ahead and preparing constraint-free work are disciplines of this same corpus. The distinction the name points at is between provision, which is planning in service of the work, and hoarding, which is accumulation in service of fear. Where the line falls is a matter of Discernment and has not been specified.

In the Game the discipline shows up at the weekly table: what I have to offer and what I ask, said plainly, week after week. A Circle running that honestly discovers within a season that most of what any member was privately securing was already available across the table.
