Ephemeralization

Doing progressively more with progressively less — more Work accomplished per unit of material, energy, and time invested for a given increment of performance.

Ephemeralization is the observed tendency of accumulated knowledge to reduce what a result costs. The same function that once needed tons, acres, and years comes to need kilograms, a room, and days. It is not a promise and not a law; it is a direction that human learning has repeatedly taken when it was allowed to, and it is the reason the arithmetic of provisioning everyone is not absurd.

It matters here because it converts a moral claim into an engineering one. Whether the Earth can support the flourishing of all is usually argued as a question about limits. Ephemeralization reframes it as a question about design and knowledge: the constraint is rarely raw material, it is how wastefully the material is arranged. Scarcity is then not a discovery about the world but very often a property of the arrangement — and arrangements can be changed.

Two cautions hold it honest. Cheaper does not mean better: efficiency that strips out resilience, relationship, or beauty has moved cost rather than removed it, which is why Design To The Goal constrains design by the Goal rather than by the budget. And cheaper often means more: a capacity made cheap gets used more, so savings must be pointed somewhere on purpose or they are simply consumed.

At a table the principle appears as a habit rather than a technology. Do the thing that takes an hour and teaches, not the thing that takes a season and impresses. Keep the instruments small enough that keeping them never becomes the work. The fourteen lines of a season on one page carry more than a report nobody reads.
