Idolatry (of the word and of the doctrine)

Mistaking the map for the terrain, the symbol for the reality, the word for the Word — and the doctrines and propositions are idols as surely as the statues were.

The old warnings were about objects: something made of gold or stone, set up, bowed to. The canon's extension is the useful part. A doctrine, a theology, a carefully worded proposition, a framework — each is also a human attempt to get the ineffable into a manageable container, and each falls just as short. A thousand written statements about a person do not capture that person; words about the Source are pointers, sacred tools, icons that guide toward the Reality and are not it.

So idolatry, precisely stated, is a misplaced focus on the medium. Not the use of words — the canon uses many — but the moment the medium stops being a means and becomes the end. The tell is what a person defends. When the wording is defended rather than the Reality it pointed at, when a revision of the formula is felt as an attack on the sacred, the exchange has already happened.

The antidote the canon names is not better wording. It is direct relationship — to seek and worship in Spirit and in truth, so that the doctrine has something to be checked against (Gnosis, Types Of Knowing, Receiving Transmission). Beside it stands the standing discipline of vigilance: make sure your word tools, doctrines, and rituals keep serving as means (Word Tools, Do Not Concretize the Absolute, Everything Is Current Best Understanding).

This is the failure at the scale of an idea. The canon names two neighbours at other scales: Institutional Idolatry, where a vessel's survival becomes the goal, and The Golden Calf, where a made thing is put at the centre and worshipped. All three are the same exchange — something fashioned taking the place of something given — and the reason this one is listed first is that it is the least visible. A person can refuse every statue and still have quietly made an idol of their own sentence.
