Integrated Project Delivery
The methodology the Pattern of Production was taken from: one team from the earliest planning through to activation, sharing risk, reward and information, optimising the whole rather than the pieces.
Traditionally work is delivered by separate companies held together by contracts, each fulfilling its own obligations and earning what it can inside them. The same logic runs through competing nonprofits, agencies, states and denominations: siloed activity with no eye to the quality, cost or safety of the whole, and predictable waste. Integrated delivery changes the frame. One team is formed early and carries through; cost is used up front as a design criterion rather than as the basis of a later claim; each trade takes responsibility for confirming that the work before it meets the standard; and everyone holds a stake in the single outcome.
It is load-bearing because it is where the production disciplines come from. Its five big ideas — collaborate, really collaborate; increase right relationship among all participants; programmes are networks of commitments; optimise for the whole, not the pieces; tightly couple learning with action — are the parent of Networks of Commitments and Tightly Coupled Learning and Action, and its planning practice is the parent of Pull planning and Last Planner System.
It also carries a warning of its own: laws and contracts are the faintest restraints on our worst impulses. What makes it work is a behavioural code — collaboration, trust, commitment-based management, continuous improvement — chosen because it is pragmatic rather than imposed because it is virtuous. Where that culture is absent, the contracts alone produce nothing.
