Semantic Capture
The page standing at a name is the meaning of every link pointing there, past and future. To claim a heavily-linked name for one narrow sense is to re-speak hundreds of earlier sentences without their authors' consent.
Capture happens when a page is created — or substantially rewritten — for one sense of a name the living corpus already uses in other or broader senses. No file is overwritten, which is exactly what makes it dangerous: the library looks intact while meaning has been rewritten underneath it. Links carry no sense-markers, so the narrow page silently becomes what every older sentence meant.
The discipline that prevents it is meaning-existence rather than file-existence. Before writing at a name, read the inbound links and the term tables and enumerate the senses actually in use. Then gather what the corpus already holds — under other names, in chapters and Cards, not only where the name appears — and cohere it: what the canon holds, the wisest general knowledge available, and the living contexts that link the name, written into the truest form presently available. The failure mode is bypass — writing from general knowledge while the corpus's own voice goes unread — never synthesis, which is the work.
Where several senses are facings of one whole (the common case), the page opens at the most encompassing sense, which serves every existing linker, and gives each facing its own section. Where meanings merely share a spelling, the bare name goes to the most-linked sense with a pointer to qualified siblings. Where the corpus holds nothing yet, say so honestly and write fresh. And verify after writing: re-read a sample of older inbound links and confirm each still reads truly.
On discovering a capture — one's own or inherited — the duty is repair: restore the encompassing sense and fold the narrow one into its rightful facing. Every Defect Is A Gift; each repair teaches where a category truly begins and ends.
