Members

A word the canon has retired: the early name for the people of this body, since replaced by Co-Creators.

The page exists to record a change rather than to define a term, and the change is worth keeping visible because the reason for it is the substance.

Member is the word an organisation uses for the people on its roll. It describes a status — you are in, or you are not — and it implies a body that exists independently and admits you to it. Everything that follows from that framing is slightly wrong here: membership can be granted and revoked by someone; it invites the question of who is in charge of the register; and it says nothing whatever about what the person does.

Co-Creator names an act rather than a status. It says the body is being made, that the one so named is making it, and that there is no version of belonging that consists only of being on a list (Co-Creation · Participation · Meaningful Work · Player). It also fits the rest of the structure: a Cell has no membership office to admit anyone, and belonging there is constituted by a Field of Agreements and by the work, not by a record (Belonging · Agreement · Consent).

The retirement is partial in practice and honesty requires saying so. Member is still the ordinary word in law and in most bodies a reader will meet, the canon's own association form carries it, and older pages across the corpus still use it (Private Ecclesiastical Voluntary Membership Association · Citizenship · Living Systems Member).

Recording a superseded word rather than deleting it is itself the practice: the wiki holds the present sense of a concept, and where a word has been replaced, the page says so and points onward, so that a reader meeting the old word in an old document knows what happened (The Wiki Reflects the Present · Weave, don't delete · Naming · A Word on Words).
