Materiality

What is worth counting, and what is not — the threshold beneath every measure.

Before any measurement there is a prior judgment nobody usually makes out loud: does this matter enough to track? Everything cannot be counted, and a body that tries drowns in its own bookkeeping; a body that counts too little cannot see itself at all. Materiality is the name for that threshold, and for the act of setting it consciously rather than by habit (Measurement, Waste, Minutes are the one unit).

It is load-bearing because thresholds decide outcomes far more quietly than measures do. What falls below the line becomes invisible, and what is invisible is treated as free — which is precisely how the old economy came to treat soil, water, air, care, and attention. Nothing was decided against them; they simply never crossed anyone's threshold (Extraction Of Wealth, The six capitals, Tragedy of the Commons).

The canon's own use of the word runs deeper than accounting. It asks that the whole material basis of our existence be re-examined, re-imagined, and re-integrated within the boundaries and principles of the living system — and that this requires consciously balancing energy within each locality, rather than importing it from somewhere nobody looks (Living System, Bioregion, Regeneration, Energy).

Its discipline is that the threshold is stated. A measure whose materiality is unwritten looks objective and is not: someone chose what counts, and if they did not say so, nobody can argue with them. Saying it converts an invisible judgment into a decision a body can revisit (Transparency, Decision Records, Honesty about time).
