Field of Agreements

The living system of interwoven agreements a body has freely chosen — voluntary covenants and never imposed law, read at the door, accepted once, honoured until renegotiated.

This is what governs, instead of rulers. Every Domain has one, explicit or not; the discipline is to make it explicit so it can be examined, consented to, and improved. It holds space for the domain: it defines purpose, principles, practices, boundaries, and commitments; it governs the Selectively Permeable Membrane — what enters, what leaves, on what terms; and it governs the Commons — how shared things are resourced, stewarded, and accessed.

Without one, a body has no shared governance, only shared assumptions, and assumptions cannot be appealed to when they are broken. With one, Sovereignty is expressed through freely chosen structure rather than through imposed control — which is the difference between a body of peers and an institution with members.

It answers six questions: Purpose — what is this domain for, and does it align with The Goal? Principles — what do we commit to embody? Practices — how often do we meet, how do we decide, how do we handle conflict? Boundaries — who is in, how do new members join, how is the membrane governed? Commitments — what does each member contribute? Stewardship — how is the commons held? The same six work at every scale, from a person's agreements with themselves and ØNE to the planetary field.

In play, it is the first thing a player meets and the thing they keep meeting: read at the door before they say yes, invoked when something goes wrong, amended by Proposal at a turning. A Cell that writes one in its first season has done most of what governance asks of it.
