Patterns of Life

The unwritten pole opposite the patterns of death: the recurring shapes by which living things persist, repair, and bring forth more life.

Here the canon's lopsidedness runs the other way. The patterns of death are written; the patterns of life are a name. Which is strange, because the whole Way is an attempt to enumerate them, and nearly every instrument in it is one: a cell that carries the whole code, a body that divides rather than swells, a boundary that is permeable rather than sealed, a rhythm that includes rest, a wound that is surfaced rather than hidden (Cell, Selectively Permeable Membrane, Rest And Regeneration, Every Defect Is A Gift).

Read together, a few shapes recur wherever life persists. The whole is carried in every part, so that loss anywhere is survivable (HoloFractal, Nucleus). Growth is by division and propagation, not by enlargement of a centre (Propagate; do not scale, Self-Sustenance and Self-Replication). Boundaries filter rather than seal, because a closed thing starves and an open thing dissolves (Guard the Membrane). Waste is food — what one part discards, another uses, and nothing leaves the system (Compost, Regeneration, Commons-Tending). Damage is signalled early and loudly, and repair is continuous rather than heroic (Pain (as signal), Continuous Improvement). Diversity is held, because a monoculture is a single point of failure wearing the appearance of efficiency (Biodiversity, Meta Unity of Meta Diversity).

It is load-bearing because it turns the compass from a warning into a design language. Knowing what kills is necessary and not sufficient; a body also needs to know the shapes that make things live, so that it can build them on purpose rather than hoping (The Polarity Doctrine, Living System, Design).

The test each of these must pass is the canon's own: does a living body actually do this, and why? A pattern with no living analogue is a preference dressed as a law (Complex Adaptive Living System, Permaculture).
