Ontology
The study of Being itself across the different levels, qualities, structures, and purposes of existence.
Ontology asks what there is and in what manner it is. In this Field it does that work twice over. In the metaphysical sense it is the inquiry into Being across levels — the ladder from Source through Logos, Energy, matter, life, and the scales of the living world. In the working sense the canon uses the word for something more concrete: a named vocabulary that fixes what each term resolves to, so that the same word means the same thing in two mouths.
The Story's own ontology page is the model of the second sense: a table of the named concepts the Story references, each resolving to a page or to a plain gloss, described as the spine the wider map hangs from. That is ontology as infrastructure. It is load-bearing because a federated body with no shared referents cannot federate — Interoperability begins with words meaning the same thing, and A Word on Words states the failure mode the canon is guarding against: the most important words of a people are the first taken and worn hollow.
The two senses meet in a discipline. One canonical home per concept and Link concepts, not coordinates keep the vocabulary from scattering; Word Tools keeps it from hardening — every name is a pointer, held lightly, and when two people find they mean different things they fix the word, not each other. Essences, Renderings, And Ineffable Referents is the standing reminder that no ontology reaches the referent.
In play, ontology arrives as the twelve words at the table: enough shared vocabulary to play, each opening onto a whole page, with no fixed number of the rest.
