Metaphysics
The study of the fundamental nature of Reality, Being, and the hidden structures behind appearances — the inquiry Pillar I names.
Metaphysics is the discipline of asking what is actually the case beneath what appears. In this Field it is not an academic specialism; the canon treats it as one half of the Pillar's own name and as a practice a civilization either does consciously or does badly by default. Every society runs on metaphysical commitments — about what a person is, what value is, what the world is for. The only question is whether they are examined.
It is load-bearing as the naming of the inquiry itself. Where Ontology asks after Being, Cosmology after origin and destiny, Epistemology after knowing, Axiology after value, and Teleology after purpose, Metaphysics is the wider room those questions are asked in. The canon's warrant for putting it first is historical: in the old world the sacred foundation was lost and corrupted, and what followed was existential confusion, systemic incoherence, and collapse. Incoherence at this layer is not harmless; it propagates.
The canon adds a discipline that keeps the inquiry from hardening. Essences, Renderings, And Ineffable Referents holds that every metaphysical statement is a rendering pointing at something beyond both Current Best Understanding and Current Best Articulation. The Ineffable is the paired practice of not crowding what cannot be said. And Mystery is kept as a positive category rather than a placeholder for future knowledge.
In play, metaphysics is not asked of a player at the door. It arrives later, and sideways — when a Cell finds it disagrees about what its Quest is finally for, and discovers the disagreement was never about the Quest.
