The First 999 Concepts

The claim that there is a bounded vocabulary — a set, not a library — sufficient to regenerate the whole from any surviving Cell.

Every system is carried by its key terms, and to learn a language is to receive the system that speaks it. The claim here is stronger than that: that the set is finite and nameable, small enough to be held and taught, and complete enough that someone holding it could rebuild everything else from it (The Language of LIØNSBERG, The LIØNSBERG Lexicon, Self-Sustenance and Self-Replication).

What makes the claim worth making is that it is falsifiable in principle. Hand the set to someone who has none of the rest, and see whether they can read the corpus afterwards, and whether they can reconstruct what is missing. A bounded vocabulary that fails that test is a word list; one that passes is a seed (The Golden Seed, Receive The Seed, Conditions of Acceptance).

It sits inside a ladder of bounded sets that the corpus keeps and does not reconcile: a handful of words a table needs to begin playing; a middle set that everything else assumes; the irreducible elements by which bodies organise; and this one, the vocabulary floor (The Twelve Words, The Core Concepts, Twelve Irreducible Elements, The vocabulary ladder).

Its honest state is ore. The number is named in several places as a live thing, no page of that name exists in the corpus, and the field that would be its home counts roughly a thousand without reference to it. Whether 999 is a finding, a target, or a figure chosen for its shape is not stated anywhere (We Do Not Know, Work In Progress, Gaps Not Yet Closed).

What is not in doubt is the discipline underneath, which holds whether or not the number does: define once, in one place, and link thereafter, so that a people divided by its vocabulary can think together again (One canonical home per concept, Link concepts, not coordinates, A Word on Words, Word Tools, Semantic Capture).
