Conditions of Acceptance

The constraint set before the design: whatever is built must be reachable by anyone, from any starting point, regardless of previous context.

A condition of acceptance is what a thing must satisfy before it counts as done — the requirement the work is accepted against, fixed before the work begins rather than argued after it. This body set one such condition over everything it makes: a pathway accessible to all, regardless of previous context. No prerequisite reading, no assumed schooling, no vocabulary a person must already possess, no gate of background or belief.

It is a constraint rather than a value, and constraints cost. The visible cost is that the first lessons look rudimentary to someone who arrives already fluent, and the honest answer given to that reader is that the elementary opening is deliberate and that nothing prevents them going faster — nothing holds you back, no permission is required, starting today. The deeper cost is on every designer: a single instrument must be usable by a person with no context and by a person with thirty years of it, which is exactly the discipline One tool, every scale asks of scale and this asks of readiness.

What it buys is the difference between a movement and a club. Any pathway that requires a starting point selects for whoever already has it, and then mistakes that selection for the shape of who is interested. Setting reach as an acceptance condition rather than an aspiration means a design that excludes is simply not finished — it has failed its test, not fallen short of its ideal.

It is also the reason the corpus keeps a small cohered path beside a vast uncohered territory, and the reason its instruments degrade to paper and its language is plain. The same condition, applied to the door, to the tools, and to the words.
