The Fundamental Tone

The sound the First Turning made — the deepest vibration, to which everything in the cosmos ultimately harmonizes.

The canon's telling of the beginning is musical rather than mechanical. Out of the Stillness, ØNE turned upon and within Itself — to know Itself, to taste Itself, to spend Itself in finitude and form. That First Turning made a sound. Everything after is that sound differentiating: from the Tone came the Song, from the Song vibration, from vibration light, from light the halls of space, from space the sweet illusion of time in which one note can follow another and a story can be told at all.

The point of the image is not decoration. A tone has harmonics; a fundamental gives a whole overtone series its structure, and every note that sounds in tune with it is in tune with all the others by consequence. That is what the canon is claiming about reality: things cohere not because they were bolted together but because they are all sounding relative to one thing. Coherence is being in tune with the Tone. Resonance is the recognition of it in something else. Attunement is the work of getting back into it.

Two things follow that a reader can carry. First, harmony is available rather than imposed — you do not have to build the order, only stop sounding against it. Second, the Tone is still sounding. The canon is emphatic that the Song is not finished: the heartbeat under your hand is your own small share of it, carried in unbroken lineage from the First Turning to this breath, and each beat adds to the Symphony rather than merely borrowing from it (The Song of Creation, The Divine Symphony).

Held honestly, this is ore of the finest grade: one paragraph of body in a canon-grade scene, and a name that the audit ledger has twice listed as a card to be written and never written.
