The Divine Symphony

The whole in motion — each being playing a unique and essential part, and the beauty being in the harmony rather than in any one line.

The image is old and it carries a precise idea. In a symphony no part is redundant and no part is the whole; the second oboe is not a lesser violin. Depth, nuance, and beauty come from difference held in relationship, and from each player being fully themselves in time with the others. That is what a rightly related world sounds like from above.

The practices the image implies are the ones a body can actually run: cultivate awareness of the interconnectedness that weaves unique expressions together, so that people recognise their own part as essential; encourage the expression of individual and collective gifts in harmony with the fundamental tone rather than against it; build a culture of collaboration and mutual appreciation; cultivate inner harmony, because a player out of tune with themselves cannot be in tune with anyone; practise deep listening and Attunement; and keep learning, because the piece is still being composed and parts shift as the world changes.

It is load-bearing as the cohering image of the whole. Higher Order Functional Unity is the systems word for it, Holofractal Omnifederation is the structural form, Meta Unity of Meta Diversity is the governance phrase — but a symphony is what all three feel like when they are working, and the image travels where the terms do not.

Its discipline is the refusal of two easy failures: everyone playing the same note, which is uniformity mistaken for unity, and everyone playing whatever they like, which is noise mistaken for freedom. Harmony is neither.
