The Game of Empire and Oligarchy

The anti-pattern named as a game, because that is what it is: power-over pursued by controlling the lines everything moves along, and by bringing every lesser body under one hand.

It has a shape that repeats across centuries and continents, which is what makes it a pattern rather than a period. Take the lines rather than the land (Supply Line Supremacy). Keep the conquered divided so the conquest need not be repeated (Divide and Conquer · Keep Divided To Keep Conquered). Bring every organisation of any power inside the arrangement, or under it. Control what is known about all of it (Control Of Information, Centralization Of Power, Regulatory Capture).

Naming it as a game does specific work. A game has rules, a scoring system, and players who are playing it whether or not they would describe themselves that way — which is more useful and less flattering than a story about villains. It also means it can be declined: the move available is not to beat this game but to stop playing it and to build somewhere the rules are different (The Rules of The Game, Withdrawal Of Consent, New Wine Requires New Wineskins).

Its opposite is not a nicer empire. It is federation — bodies that keep their own sovereignty and join for what none can do alone, with authority flowing from responsibility rather than from position (Federations vs Empires, Federation, Subsidiarity, Authority derived from responsibility).

And the counter to its central move is local capability: a body that can make, grow, and repair enough of what it needs is not available to be held by whoever holds the lines (Self-Sustenance and Self-Replication, Supply Chains, Individual And Local, Structural Immunity).
