The Kit

The middle of the three tiers: the seed text together with the working parts — the Playbook, the Operating System, the lessons, and the agents — that a house takes one unit at a time.

The Seed is the smallest thing from which the whole can be regrown; the canon is the whole; the Kit is what stands between them. It holds the parts a person or a house actually picks up: the rules read aloud, the cards filled at a table, the lessons of the deck, the charter an agent reads before it reads anything else. Each unit travels alone, carries its own lineage and its own licence, and can be declined without breaking the rest.

The Kit is load-bearing because a pattern that arrives only as a whole arrives for almost nobody. A Cell that has a notebook and three people is already playing; the Kit lets it add one part at a time, in the order its own play asks for, and never forces a part it has no use for. Nothing is ever pushed into a house: a house reads what a new release changed, decides with its person what to take, installs by its own hand, and says where it diverged and did better. That is what keeps a body connected without being commanded.

Two lines of kit meet here and are not the same thing. the starter kit's public starter kit gives the shapes — a lineage file, standalone lessons and skills, pull-not-push — and is credited by name wherever it is carried. The Game's own line adds what that kit does not: the Story, the Game, and the seed text itself. A house may run either, or both, or neither and keep a notebook.
