The Ten Universal Principles Across Streams

Ten things every authentic stream of a tradition carries, whatever its vocabulary — and the falsification rule that comes with them: a stream missing one has drifted, however prestigious its lineage.

The streams are many and the water in them is one. Every continent has produced lineages with their own forms, founders, vocabularies, and transmissions, and the canon's position is that they are neither interchangeable nor in competition — different windows onto the same reality.

What is claimed to be the same behind the windows:

Orientation to the Source, under whatever name that stream uses. A vow or covenant binding the cultivated capacity to service. Cultivation of the person as the conduit — body, breath, mind, spirit — through disciplined practice. Recognition of the field the visible form arises out of. The integration of fierceness and gentleness, held as one thing rather than alternated. A transmission lineage, on the understanding that the practice passes being to being and never from a page alone. The master's responsibility for the student, and the student's responsibility to the lineage. Acknowledgement of destructive capacity as sober necessity, never glorified. The understanding that form is a vehicle, not a destination. And the continuous improvement of the practice itself across generations.

The falsification rule is what makes this an instrument. A stream holding all ten is in alignment whatever its cultural vocabulary; a stream that has lost any of them has drifted, however long or celebrated its line. That gives a person a way to evaluate a tradition without being either credulous or parochial — and it cuts against the home lineage as readily as against a foreign one (Honoring Lineage Without Lineage-Capture, Discernment).

Beside it stands the second discipline, and it is the harder one: each stream is credited with its own shadow as well as its own gift. Every stream has failure modes it is particularly prone to when the vow drifts. A practitioner who can name their own lineage's shadow as readily as its gift is walking faithfully; one who cannot has already been captured (The Four Warrior-Guild Capture Modes, Shoshin).
