The Threefold Capacity

Creation, healing, and destruction held co-equally by the same trained hands.

The claim is uncomfortable and deliberate: the capacity to destroy is not separated off and given to a specialist class. It is held by the same people who create and who heal, and it is held as one of three, not as a shameful exception to the other two.

The reason is what happens when the capacities are split. Given to a separate caste, destruction loses its connection to what it was for; the specialists become the only ones who understand it, then the only ones who may judge its use, and the body that outsourced it can no longer govern it. And the one who has only ever built has no honest sense of what breaking costs, which makes them both easier to frighten and more careless when they finally authorize it.

Held together, each capacity disciplines the others. The one who has healed a wound knows what a wound is. The one who has built a thing knows what its destruction erases. The one who can destroy and does not is exercising Restraint As The Refusal To Act rather than merely lacking an option. This is why The Sacred Use Of Force can be bounded at all: the bound is held by someone who has felt all three sides of it.

The practice that accompanies it is a funeral. Destruction, when it happens, is mourned rather than celebrated, and the capacity is deliberately laid down afterward. A body that celebrates its own destructive acts has begun to want occasions for them.

The same holds at ordinary scale. Ending a project, closing a body, releasing a bond, letting a form die so the next can live — these are the small exercises of the third capacity, and Disbanding names the just version of it.
