Rhythm
Patterned recurrence — the beat by which a body coordinates itself without anyone directing it, and the first thing a new Cell actually sets.
Rhythm is the same thing happening again at a known interval. Breath, heartbeat, sunrise, tide, week, season: the world runs on recurrence, and so does every living body inside it. A body that has a rhythm can be relied upon; a body without one drifts toward whoever is loudest and most insistent.
It is load-bearing because it is the substitute for management. With no boss issuing instructions, what keeps a hundred sovereign people moving as one is that they all know what happens on Thursday. Set the rhythm and most coordination problems dissolve before they are problems; lose it and no amount of enthusiasm replaces it. Consistency beats intensity — a modest gathering held every week forms a body; a brilliant one held when-we-get-to-it forms nothing.
In the Game, the rhythms are nested and few. Daily: The Daily Way — pause, ground, breathe, remember, realign, recommit. Weekly: The Turn, the same day and place, the heartbeat of the whole Game and the same beat in every Circle on Earth. Monthly: a synthesis, stepping back to ask whether the Quests and the Circle are healthy. Seasonally: the turning, the counting, the telling, the choosing, the sheet. Yearly: the long look. These are fractal — they breathe at the scale of a person's day, a Circle's week, a community's season, a bioregion's year.
In the System, rhythm is what the plan is pulled against: the look-ahead runs six weeks out each week, constraints get owners and dates, and only constraint-free work is released. Setting the cadence is one of the opening moves, not an administrative afterthought, because everything else attaches to it.
A rhythm is kept by being kept. It survives one person's absence, a bad week, and a season when nothing much happens — and that survival is most of what it is for.
