Exchange

Giving and receiving in omniconsiderate right relationship, for mutual upliftment.

Exchange is the act by which value moves between two parties who both end better off. The adjective matters more than the noun: omniconsiderate means the two parties are not the only parties. An exchange that leaves both sides satisfied and the watershed poisoned, or the next generation indebted, is not an exchange in this sense — it is a transfer with the costs pushed somewhere no one at the table was counting.

Three conditions make an exchange honest here. Both sides consent, freely and knowingly — an exchange under duress, under manufactured Scarcity, or under an asymmetry of information is extraction wearing a trade's clothes. What is exchanged is recognized — value unnoticed cannot be valued and cannot be transacted, which is why naming and counting contribution is an act of justice and not of bureaucracy. The ledger closes — what was given is recorded so it can be honoured later, which is what Proof-of-contribution means and why contribution once recorded is never retracted.

Exchange is one of two live modes of movement, and it is the lesser one. The Gift moves value without a matching return and builds the relationship that makes future exchange cheap; exchange moves value between parties who may be strangers and need not become friends. A healthy body runs both: gift inside the circle of trust, exchange across its boundary, and Reciprocity as the principle that keeps the two from hardening into charity on one side and extraction on the other. Neither mode need be monetary — barter, kind, skill for skill, hours for hours all count, and the multi-capital lens is what lets them count.

At a Cell's table, exchange looks like offers and requests: this is what we have to give, this is what we need. Those two lines travel every week, up and down and sideways, and that — not a market — is how a body allocates itself without a centre.
