Trade

Exchange between bodies rather than within one — what crosses a membrane, on terms both sides set.

Exchange describes value moving between parties. Trade is the case where those parties are whole bodies — a Cell and a Cell, a Community and a Community, a guild and a bioregion — each sovereign, each with its own Field of Agreements, neither inside the other's boundary. That difference is not decorative. Inside a body, Gift and Mutual Aid do most of the work and the accounting stays loose, because the members share a fate. Across a boundary the fate is not shared, so the terms must be explicit, and a Selectively Permeable Membrane is what makes them explicit.

Three things carry over from the Pattern and are the whole of what is settled. Trade crosses a membrane as requests, offers, and commitments — never as a task one body assigns another; a commitment between bodies is a promise given by someone with the standing to give it. It is omniconsiderate: the parties to a trade are not the only parties, and an arrangement that suits both signatories while costing a watershed or a generation is extraction with paperwork. And it is reciprocal over time rather than balanced per transaction — Reciprocity, not a running tally, is the governing test between bodies that intend to keep meeting.

What is not settled is most of the rest. The canon lists Trade among operational economic mechanics with nothing behind it: no terms of trade, no dispute path between federated bodies, no statement of how local currencies clear across a boundary — though LUV gestures at interoperable local CurrentSees that circulate within a Community and are readable across the wider federation without being extractable by distant capital. That gesture is a direction, not a protocol.

For now a Cell trades the way anyone sensible does: agree the terms out loud before the work, write them down, name who is responsible on each side, and say what happens if it goes wrong. Then record what actually happened, so the next trade starts from something real.
