Oneness

The condition of being one — both the standing fact that all things inter-exist, and the lived experience of knowing it.

Three neighbouring words are easy to run together and are worth keeping apart. ØNE names the Source — that within which all things are. Union names the movement toward re-integration with it, and its end-state. Oneness names the condition itself: what is true whether or not anyone has noticed, and what it is like when someone does.

The first half is ontological. Things are not separate in the way they appear; they inter-exist, and their apparent individuation is real without being final (InterExistence · Holarchy · Uncaused Cause · The Great Chain of Being). It is from this, and not from sentiment, that the canon's ethics follow: what is done to any one is done to ØNE and to All, which is an inference rather than an exhortation (The Logic Of Love · None Of Us Until All Of Us · Right Relationship).

The second half is experiential, and every contemplative tradition reports it: the moment when separateness thins and a person knows themselves to be inside one thing rather than beside it. The canon treats such moments as real and as unreliable to reason from — they are met with the same posture as any perception, held rather than built on (Gnosis · Awe · Silence And Stillness As The Ground · Discernment · We Do Not Know).

The essential guard is the one every page in this Pillar repeats: oneness is not sameness. A unity that dissolves its parts is not this. The tapestry keeps its colours, the symphony keeps its instruments, and a person becoming at one with the whole becomes more themselves rather than less (Meta Unity of Meta Diversity · One of the Ones of the ØNE · Sovereignty · Inexhaustible Individuals · That Which Is Longing To Emerge).

Its practical form is unglamorous and near at hand: treating another's flourishing as genuinely one's own, because it is (Kinship · Mutual Aid · Reciprocity · Belonging).
