LIØNSBERG Cycles of Growth and Cycle Time

Growth counted in cycles of the Fibonacci spiral rather than in headcount — and the one quantity actually managed is not the count but the time a cycle takes.

Movements that measure themselves by headcount learn to chase it. Counting in cycles changes what the number rewards. Each cycle's growth equals the size of the mature body — which is the arithmetic way of saying that only a matured Cell replicates, and that a body swollen with members who have not yet been formed has not advanced a cycle at all (Fibonacci, Fibonacci Spread, Self-Sustenance and Self-Replication). The pattern is held as substantive rather than decorative: it is a claim about how living things actually grow, and it can be wrong.

Cycle time — days per cycle — is the managed quantity. This is the ordinary discipline of any flowing system applied to a movement: you do not manage the size of the queue, you manage how long one unit takes to pass through, and everything else follows from that. A body that shortens its cycle time compounds; a body that lengthens it is stalling regardless of how many people have said yes. Both figures are reported at every seasonal turning, plainly, as current cycle and days per cycle, with no adornment (The Record as the Movement's variance gauge).

The cycles also carry the structural triggers. The first Co-Creators standing at roughly cycle ten is what calls the planning group into being; the marker of record, cycle forty, is the three in a hundred — on the order of two hundred and fifty million people, arrived at as three percent of about eight billion, an estimate and not a measurement (The First Three Percent). These are thresholds, not dates: the markers serve the work and the work does not serve the markers, and how fast a flame spreads once it catches is not knowable in advance.
