Protocol

A pattern of action agreed in advance, so that when the hard moment comes nobody has to invent a response.

A protocol is a decision made early about a situation that will arrive later. Its value is entirely in the timing: the moment that most needs clear thinking is the moment least able to supply it. Deciding beforehand what happens when someone is in danger, when a dispute cannot be resolved, when a member vanishes, or when a stranger appears at the door is what keeps those moments from being decided by whoever is loudest or most frightened.

It preserves harmony, honour, and Right Relationship precisely because it is not improvised. Everyone knows in advance what will happen, which means nobody has to read the outcome as a judgment about them personally, and the person who invokes it is not making a move against anyone — they are doing the thing the body already agreed.

Protocols of engagement say what may be done and by whom. An escalation protocol says where an unresolved thing goes next: first between the people concerned, then to the Circle, then to elders for counsel, then to whatever body the agreements name — each step known, each step reversible, none of them a trapdoor. Under all of them sits the word anyone may say: Stop takes effect at once, and only the one who said it may lift it.

The danger is ossification. A protocol is a tool and not a law; it exists inside Current Best Understanding like everything else below the Goal, and when it stops serving the thing it was made for it is amended by Proposal rather than defended. A body that cannot change its protocols has acquired a ruler that nobody appointed.
