The Arithmetic of the Flame

The spread written out as a ladder — one wakes one, two become three, three become five, and on up through the small numbers until the counting stops mattering and a threshold is crossed.

The telling runs it twice. First as awakening: one reaches one, then two, then three, five, eight, thirteen — each freed person stopping to liberate the next, orient them, set their feet on the path, and welcome them on. Then as the same climb continued upward through the hundreds and thousands to a fraction of a population, and from that fraction to the majority (Fibonacci, Fibonacci Spread, The First Three Percent, The Tipping Point Cascade).

The image it gives itself is water through a dam: a few drops at first, through cracks nobody sealed, and then the dam is irrelevant. The point of the image is that no step is heroic. Each one is a person handing something to someone they already know (Pass The Flame, The Whisper Campaign, The pace of trust).

The numbers are an estimate of how a thing spreads, not a measurement of anything. They are the source's figures, written in its own voice, and the corpus's own seed text gives a different arithmetic for the same spread. Two live numberings exist, neither derived, and nothing reconciles them (The Golden Seed, We Do Not Know, Honesty about time).

What is durable underneath them is not arithmetic at all but three structural claims, and each can be argued without a single figure. That spread is multiplicative rather than additive, so the early numbers look like failure and the later ones look like miracle, and both readings are wrong (Network Effects, Propagate; do not scale). That a minority is sufficient to move a whole, which is why the work is not to convince everyone (Tipping Point Strategy, Islands of coherence to network). And that the ladder has two halves — waking people up, and then gathering them into bodies that can do something — with the second half being where almost every movement stalls (Form a Cell, The First Few, Grow Your Cells).
