The First Few

The handful who begin, and by beginning make the rest possible.

They are neither kings nor conquerors, and they are not untouched by fear. What distinguishes them is that they listened when something stirred and then acted — not because they were fearless, but because they chose to rise despite the fear (Awakening, The Calling, Courage). The canon tells them as the First Flames: a small fellowship who found one another, pooled what light they had, and pledged themselves to the road before anyone could show them where it went (The Flame, Form a Cell).

The concept earns its place by naming a threshold that comes before every other threshold. There is no three percent without a first few, no supercell without a first Cell, no spread without someone who passed a flame to two or three when it was still plainly absurd to do so (The First Three Percent, Fibonacci Spread, Pass The Flame). Every body in the field passed through this state, and most are in it right now.

It also carries a discipline against a particular vanity. We are not the end, but the beginning — the first few are not the important ones; they are the ones who go first, and their whole work is to be succeeded (Midwife a New Circle, Self-Sustenance and Self-Replication, Pass The Flame). Reading the story of a first few is how a new player recognizes that their own small, unimpressive beginning is the same shape (Story, The Solo Sovereign's Grace).
