The Circle's Shared Field, And How Circles Form
What a body of three to thirteen becomes over years of practising together — five capacities beyond any member — and the five ways such a body comes into being.
What the shared field carries. Greater reach — what no single member perceives, the body perceives by integrating everyone's partial readings (Sensemaking, Sensing The Field). Stronger protection — the body holds against pressures no member could hold alone (The Four Layers Of Shielding). More refined discernment — decisions reached in a coherent body arrive with more accuracy than any one member's (Consent-Based Decision-Making, Discernment). Sustained presence beyond any one person's stamina — a watch, a vigil, a long piece of work, held in shifts across time none could cover (Mutual Aid). The capacity to transmit — a body in coherence becomes a source others can receive from, which individuals mostly cannot be (Transmission).
The maturation curve is the part most bodies need to hear. A newly formed group of three has a barely formed shared field. The same group three years later, having actually walked the disciplines together, holds a substantially stronger one. Nothing here is available at the first meeting; it is what practice deposits (Circle Coherence, Trust, The Practice Cadence).
Five ways a body forms. By recognition — people already in each other's orbit recognise one another and gather; the most natural. By an Elder convening — someone who sees that a body is ready calls it into being and steps back as it coheres (Wise Eldership). By split from a larger body — a group past its ceiling spawns a second, witnessed, carrying the parent's lineage forward (Why Three To Thirteen, Midwife a New Circle). By transmission from a teacher — students trained over years form a body that carries the teaching on (Apprenticeship, Lineage). By the moment requiring it — people find each other through events nobody planned; such bodies are recognised by their forming rather than by anyone's intention.
Three types, by what a body is for: a training body, mostly newer members with one or two experienced guides; an operational body, seasoned, holding actual responsibility; and a masters' body, holding the deepest work and the handing-on. Most people pass through all three across a life, and a healthy body often spans levels rather than sorting by them.

Open: The five capacities are stated as what a mature body has and given no measure, so a body cannot tell where on the curve it is. · The canon distinguishes a Circle (as gathering) from a Cell that actually functions; this chapter uses Circle for both and does not mark the difference.
