Tradition

What is handed down — the cultural and historical inheritance of a people, preserved and upheld, and passed on to those who come after.

A tradition is not old habit. It is something that has been carried across generations because it held, and the carrying is itself an act: someone had to decide it was worth keeping, and someone had to teach it (Lineage · Remembrance · Transmission · Pass The Flame · Wise Eldership).

Its value is that it encodes what worked. Much of it is a solution to a problem the current generation has not had to meet yet, in a form nobody can any longer explain — which is exactly why it should not be removed simply because no reason for it is visible. The absence of a remembered reason is not evidence of no reason (Pattern · The Pattern That Works · Foundational Literature · Shoshin).

And its danger is the same fact from the other side. A tradition carries whatever it carried — including injustice, and including arrangements that served whoever set them. It has always been done this way is a description, never an argument, and the canon is direct about inherited authority that rests on nothing else (The Old Authorities · Institutional Idolatry · Do Not Concretize the Absolute).

So the canon holds both at once, and its name for holding them is innovation-in-tradition: neither the wholesale rejection that throws away what a people learned, nor the preservation that mistakes the form for the thing. This is also why the canon receives from many traditions rather than founding against them.
