Gathering and Integrating Energy

Attention and time arrive on their own; energy must be gathered, cultivated and integrated — so discern and test the energy of a thing before interacting with it.

The distinction the chapter opens with is the one that makes it useful. Attention and time are given second by second simply because you exist. Energy is not. It has to be taken in, made your own, and released into work — which means a life can be rich in hours and empty of the capacity to use them, and most people who feel they have no time in fact have no energy (Vitality, TimeEnergy).

What follows is a single practical principle: discern and test the energy of a thing before interacting with it. Every act of taking in — food, information, company, entertainment, an arrangement, a commitment — is an exchange and leaves something behind. Test first, because after the exchange you are testing with an instrument the exchange has already altered (Discernment, Sensing The Field, Sensing comes before understanding).

The warning the chapter gives is specific and worth carrying plainly: the things most corrosive to a person are rarely repellent. They are engineered or evolved to be attractive, and the disgust that would have protected you arrives, if at all, after the damage (Distortion, Idols Of The Pantheon, Technology Is Not Neutral). This is why the discipline has to be a habit of testing rather than a reliance on instinct — instinct is exactly what is being farmed.

Two things keep it from becoming fearfulness. Testing is not avoidance: the point is discernment about what to take in, not a life narrowed to the safe (Dangerous But Good, Courage). And the capacity grows by use — the ability to sense and test opens reciprocally as a person practises, cleanses and gains skill, so a beginner's poor readings are the expected starting condition rather than a verdict (Attunement, Shoshin, The Living Gradient).

The chapter also makes the link the canon cares most about: being discerning about the energies you interact with is the cornerstone of ceasing to harm yourself — and therefore of ceasing to fuel what harms everyone (First, Do No Harm). What is gathered here is spent in the chapter that follows, where work that produces throughput of the Goal is Value and the rest is Waste.
