The Issue-To-Movement Arc
How a felt wrong becomes a force: issue → cause → inspiration → movement. Four phases, each with its own work, and three transitions where most attempts die.
Issue. A specific wrong in a specific place. It exists whether or not anyone names it, and the person who feels it usually feels alone — why does no one else see this? The work here is naming, because a named thing becomes visible to everyone else who felt it and had no words (Issue, Naming, Sensing The Field).
Cause. The named issue becomes a cause when people gather around it. Now there are others; now there is something to study. The work is understanding — mapping the thing, finding the structures that produce it, seeing who is harmed and who benefits (Root Causes, The Total Nested Holarchy of Issues, Circle).
Inspiration. The cause becomes an inspiration when a picture of the alternative appears and the body stops being merely against something. This is the hinge: people will join a thing they can see, and will not join a complaint (Forward-Looking Story, Vision, Best Possible Future, Demonstrate before advocating).
Movement. The inspiration becomes a movement when enough people commit to building it at scale — identity, communication, structure, ongoing work, leadership that can be distributed. The work becomes sustaining: holding the vision's integrity while federating across distance (The Movement, Federation, Propagate; do not scale).
The arc is directional and not guaranteed. Things stall at every phase, and they can regress — a movement that loses its vision becomes an administration (Institutional Idolatry, Drift). The three transitions each fail for their own reason: issue to cause needs the courage to say it out loud first; cause to inspiration needs the creative work of articulating and then showing the alternative, which is harder than describing the problem; inspiration to movement needs operational discipline at scale, which is rarer than either (Courage, Prototyping, Integrated Delivery).
Its value is locating yourself. We have community and no picture — this season's work is the picture. A Circle that knows which transition it is standing at knows what to do next, and stops trying to solve the previous phase's problem (The Season Sheet, Choose a Quest, Prioritizing).
It is also only half of catalysis: this is what a movement is about and how its substance matures, while the spread through a population is a different question with its own answers (Pass The Flame, Tipping Point Strategy, The First Three Percent).
