Stacking Up And Aligning

How one Cell's Quest lines up with the whole, so that many aims produce throughput of one Goal.

A body of sovereign bodies has no one assigning work, so alignment has to be a move rather than a rule. Each Cell chooses a real, near, dated Quest of its own; then it checks that what it is doing stands up under the aim above it and does not cut across the aims beside it. Vision nests inside vision, and the whole functions as one body without anyone commanding any part of it (Vision, Throughput, Holarchy).

Two directions are involved, and both are ordinary. Upward: a Cell's Quest and its milestones are published and gathered into the plan of the level above, which weaves them and broadcasts the woven plan back as the upper half of every card — so each table can see where its stretch of road sits (The plan of the whole, The Playcard, Milestone). Sideways: at each turning a home notices two Cells questing for the same corner lot and tells each of the other, so effort converges by knowledge rather than by order (The Season Sheet, Home Cell, Requests and offers).

The discipline that makes it real is pull. Plans are made backward from the end and the interface commitments between bodies are agreed in both directions, so that aligned means a chain of promises that actually meet rather than a shared set of adjectives (Pull planning, Networks of Commitments, Critical Path).

Its inverse is the failure the Pattern is most often accused of: many good Cells, all busy, none of it adding up. Alignment costs one question per season, asked out loud — does this stack up? — and refusing to ask it is how a movement becomes a scatter (The Two-Stake Principle, Design To The Goal).
