The Board
The one public picture of the whole Game: who is playing, what they are questing, where it is going, and why.
The Board is what the sheets look like when they are gathered in one place: every Cell beside every other, its Quests, its Score, its offers and requests. Each week a Cell sends a few lines to it through The weekly door; each turning, a season's sheet is typed in line for line. Then a body of ten thousand can see itself — and a person in one town can see the east side of another town the way that side saw itself on its own Sunday evening.
It is load-bearing because it is how a body with no center allocates itself. Requests and offers are only useful if someone who can answer them can see them. It is also load-bearing in what it is not: the Board is a faster way of reading the record, never the record itself. The record is the paper, in ten thousand boxes, with two signatures and a line count on each sheet. Nothing typed ever replaces a sheet, and if the two disagree, the paper is the record.
How it is used. One weekly door, so nothing has to be entered twice: the Turn's lines, a new or renewed pledge, a gift offered, a change of state, a new Cell taking its place, a new Quest, a story harvested. Where there is no wire, the Board is a wall, a notebook, and a person who walks the sheets to the nearest table that has a screen — and the Game is still whole; it is simply a game of paper for now. What a Cell shows on the Board is what it has chosen to show; membranes are decided on purpose, and a private friendship is allowed to stay one.
