Host

Whoever keeps the room and holds the record for a season — a servant of the gathering, not its head.

A host opens the Turn and closes it, keeps the order of the round so that each person is heard, watches the clock so the hour does not eat the evening, and makes sure the ordinary things happen: the cards marked, one story told, something put in the middle (The Offering). At a turning the two hosts witness the Season Sheet with their signatures, and that witness — two hands and a line count — is the whole of the page's security.

The office is deliberately light. Hosting is a stance rather than an authority: the host has no vote the others lack, decides nothing for the body, and is doing the work well when the room barely notices it being done (Servant Leadership). Two hold it at once and both hand it on at the season's end (The Two-Coordinator Rhythm, Term Limits And Rotation).

It is a role anyone can learn, and the learning is part of the design. A body in which hosting has gone all the way round is a body where everyone has felt the weight of keeping a room, and where no absence is fatal. When friction rises in the room, the host's first move is usually to name it and slow the pace rather than to rule on it (Mend a Tension, Check In); when a newcomer arrives, the host is who makes the terms of the table audible before the work begins (Welcome a Newcomer).
