Domain

A bounded scope of responsibility and authority — the living space within which an association operates, nested within the holofractal Whole.

Each time sovereigns voluntarily associate, four things come into being at once: a Domain of responsibility and authority, a Selectively Permeable Membrane that bounds it, a Field of Agreements that governs it, and a Commons that it shares. The Domain is the first of the four — the space itself, with an identity, a purpose, and a scope — and the other three are unintelligible without it.

Without a named domain, responsibility becomes atmospheric: everyone is vaguely responsible for everything, which means no one is responsible for anything, and the people who care most quietly absorb the work until they break. Naming a domain is how a body converts good will into something that can be carried, handed over, and accounted for. It is also what makes Subsidiarity operable: you cannot push a decision to the smallest competent scale unless the scales have edges.

The canon uses the word in two directions, and both are live. Action Domains are the trades and functions — governance, education, health, environment, economy, culture, science, spirit, relationship — the work that must be done. Integration Domains are the places and traditions in which that work is woven into a working whole: person, marriage, family, group, Community, Tribe, Bioregion, The Planet, the living system. Every function must be integrated within every place; the unit of real work is one cell of that lattice.

Domains emerge from the bottom up, beginning with the person, and each is governed by a field of agreements that its members are encouraged to make explicit — so that it can be evaluated, consented to, and improved rather than merely inherited.
